Thread: Argentine, Argentinean or Argentinian?

I have always thought that Argentine was used for things or objects, and Argentinian/Argentinean, for people. However, I've found out that all these terms may be used interchangeably. And according to different dictionaries, all of them are accepted.

Now that I'm translating some biographies, I'd like to ask for your opinion on which of these terms would be the most appropriate one or the most widely used in English-speaking countries.

Argentina is unique in this regard.

In the U.S. ... and this is just my opinion...the two words are indeed interchangeable and either would be appropriate and readily accepted but Argentinian is more common..

He's (an) Argentinian. He's (an) Argentine. No difference

Personally, if I were referring to a person or thing I would most likely call him/her/it Argentinian. EX: John is Argentinian. The wine is Argentinian.

There IS a subtle difference in the use of the words. It sorta depends on how you form the sentence.

I'm thinking of wines and fruits that are commonly sold here and I think many would say they're Argentine, but again Argentinian would not be wrong.

In either case if we refer to people in the plural we might add an "s" as in "they're Argentinians/Argentines"; but just Argentinian/Argentine is also correct.

Argentine, to me, implies that something is of Argentinian origin, as in MADE in Argentina.

SO...in short, I guess it's your choice.

BTW...we pronounce the word Argentine two different ways. Some say ArgenTIN; others say ArgenTYNE.

But I'm now thinking of this phrase and I doubt again: "XX was an Argentine artist" (Argentine sounds better to me than Argentinian in this context, but this is my humble perception. As English is not my mother tongue, I would appreciate some more qualified opinions).
