Default Is it OK to say African American?

Is it OK to say African American? Or maybe Afro-American?
    What is the correct/legal/approved term?

Hi there, I think the most politically correct term is to say African American since some people think that the prefix "Afro-" is kind of derogatory.

Hi nablylm. I agree with iyuanobi. African American is the currently politically correct term...even if it is inaccurate. Blacks have been here for generations and are not African anymore. Certainly no more than the rest of us are English American, Italian American, French American, etc., etc. But that is the current PC term. Afro-American is not used to my knowledge.

Black is equally acceptable. The news media, for instance, use both African American and black equally.

Didn´t know that black is also acceptable, I thought it was a derogative term asi it separates people by their color D:

Yep. Here it is perfectly acceptable.

I wonder what terms are used in other countries? For instance, South Africa where English is spoken in a country that was once dominated by white colonials.

I know that in Costa Rica and Mexico they are called black (negro).
