    Depends on the context!!

    Very different:

I love lemon tart. It's sweet but not too tart

I really don't like her she is a tart

If you mean the first one in Spain we say tarta or pastel, and in southamerica I think they say torta, but don't quote me on this, best to ask a native. The second one I think is ácido (like lemon) or agrio. The third one..depends also how harsh you want to be, something like fulana??

Popette is correct and has pretty much covered all three meanings.

As an adjective it means that something is sweet but slightly sour (agrio, acido) or sharp tasting, such as lemonade...the more sugar it has the less tart it is.

Tart as a noun is as Popette says, a pastry made with some type of fruit.

Tart as used to describe a woman is used more in the UK I believe, and is a woman of loose morals. It the U.S. we would more likely use the word "slut". (una fulana, ramera, prostituta, algo asi).

    Thumbs up

I agree with both of you, Popette and Vicente!

JPablo, perhaps, if you provide more context we could be of more help...

I've never seen the word tart mean the same as slut in the USA...where does this slang word come from? Cockney?

    Hi Sabrina!

It appears to come from Cockney rhyming, just like you said. Here is some more info I found from the dictionary of slang:

Noun. 1. A prostitute or promiscuous woman. The often unisexual nature of contemporary slang ensures the phrase is now applied to promiscuous males. Derog.
    2. Derog. and offensive term for women. Derived from the Cockney rhyming slang jam tart meaning sweetheart.
    3. An objectionable person; often used affectionately or playfully.

I guess I would equate the word 'tart' with 'slut' in meaning but definitely not in harshness...slut is much more derrogatory, I think.
