Thread: "To make a rabbit cry"

This is not a common expression but

"...they blowed a fit enough to make rabbit cry." means the storms were very strong...strong enough to cause a rabbit (or a man) to cry.

We have a similar expression that means essentially the same thing: "It was enough to make a grown man cry."

Do you understand the meaning of "a fit" in this context?

I'm not sure. In this context a fit is a physical event...like a spasmodic attack, such as an attack of epilepsy (an epileptic fit) so when one has a fit they are sort of convulsive and out of control of themselves, i.e., having a difficult time of it.

Thus we use "fit" in several idiomatic expressions:

"That problem gave me a fit" means a difficult time in solving the problem ; "She had a fit when she found out her husband was unfaithful"; means like a tantrum or emotional outburst.

In the context of your paragragh "a fit" means great difficulty, in the old man's colloquial manner of speaking.
