The article makes some interesting points. However, I highly doubt that French is the world's 2nd main language. Mandarin Chinese, English, Spanish and then maybe French. But even Russian and Arabic have more speakers.

I don't like French. I prefer English, it would be awesome to learn Mandarin Chinese. I have my doubts as ludimilak about French.

I guess you are right ludmilak, you can't trust internet media these days. But if I'm not mistaken French used to be the diplomatic language used before English may be because of that they gave it relevance in that article.
