    Default Pedirle peras al olmo

    Hi everyone,

I recently heard that expression in spanish: Pedirle peras al olmo.
As a french native, i can't find the equivalent saying in french (or english).

Maybe "les chats ne font pas des chiens"?

    Hello nabylm:

Also pedir peras a un olmo

Literally to ask for pears from an elm tree or "to ask the impossible"

Perhaps Frank will come along and help you with the French version.

    Nabylm,
in fact I can't help you.
I didn't know the expression "pedirle peras al olmo"either and I don't think there is a French (nor English) saying that exactly means the same.

    Thanks Frank!!

In trying to think of an exact equivalent in English this is the closest I can think of.

    >to squeeze blood from a turnip (or stone)

There's an old Perry Como song that I can't get out of my head now :
It's Impossible ... many examples in there ...
    Bon week-end !

Frank, if you can't get the tune out of your head then you might as well have the lyrics so you can sing it in the shower.

    "It's Impossible" (Perry Como)

It's impossible, tell the sun to leave the sky
    It's just impossible
It's impossible, ask a baby not to cry
    It's just impossible

Can I hold you closer to me
And not feel you going through me
Split the second hat I never think of you
    Oh, how impossible

Can the ocean keep from rushing to the shore
    It's just impossible
If I had you, could I ever want for more
    It's just impossible

    And tomorrow
Should you ask me for the world, somehow I'd get it
I would sell my very soul and not regret it
For to live without your love
    It's just impossible

Can the ocean keep from rushing to the shore
    It's just impossible
If I had you, could I ever want for more
    It's just impossible

    And tomorrow
Should you ask me for the world, somehow I'd get it
I would sell my very soul and not regret it
For to live without your love
    It's just impossible
    Impossible, mmm
    Impossible

I knew the song but forgot the words long ago because it wasn't a favorite. My favorite Como song was/is My One and Only Heart. I've got that one on my iPod.
