I think she meant an equivalent expression, not a literal translation.

POLISH es tambien un verbo que entre sus muchos usos se refiere tambien a civilizar, educar, refinar, etc. (see thefreedictionary.com). Asi que you veo que la probable traduccion es "no puedes educar a una mierda (de gente)"

mi pequeño aporte, no tengo claro el contexto pero si se refiere a una situación, podría ser: no se puede ocultar/disfrazar la verdad"y si se refiere a una persona, la expresión equivalente sería "la mona, aunque se vista de seda, mona queda", pero repito, habría que ver el contexto.

Estoy completamente de acuerdo con mvictoria. En México se usa mucho decir: "aunque la mona se vista de seda, mona se queda" para esta situación específica que mencionas.
