Default Help a spanish-amateur with some translation

    Hello out there.
I have to translate the sentence "The waiter in the photo is in the mid-forties".
Can you actually say this on spanish, or would you have to say ”El camarero en la foto tiene a unos cuarenta y cinco años.”?
And is that sentence even correct, or is it "(...) tiene a unos de cuarenta y cinco años?

    Thanks in advance
    Jeppe

Hi Jeppe, here is the exact translation:

El camarero de la foto es de mediados de los cuarenta

And yes, it is correct and you can say it in spanish..

I am sorry to disagree, but the meaning, if put this way, is that the waiter was born around 1945.
For me, it should be El camarero de la foto está entre los cuarenta y los cincuenta o El camarero de la foto tiene cuarenta pasados (o pasaditos) in a more colloquial way.

Agree with gentle...a mediados... sounds like the year the person was born and not his age.

A very colloquial version could be:

El camarero de la foto tendrá cuarenta y pico.

Thank you, for alot of great answers.

I think i will go with the "El camarero de la foto está entre los cuarenta y los cincuenta".
You can but 'años' in the end of that sentence, right?

But what about my 2nd question?
El camarero en la foto tiene (a) unos (de) cuarenta y cinco años.
Would this sentence make most sence with/without the a and de. And is some of the versions completely wrong?

How about "El camarero de la foto tiene alrededor de 45 años"? or "El camarero de la foto tiene entre 40 y 50 años"
If you go with "El camarero de la foto está entre los 40 y los 50" you should definitely add "años" at the end of that sentence.

About your second question, the sentence is gramatically correct if you don't use "a" and "de" : "El camarero de la foto tiene unos 45 años"

    Yes, you can and should.

...El camarero en la foto tiene (a) unos (de) cuarenta y cinco años.

...de la foto...instead of ...en la foto...

a and e are grammatically and syntactically incorrect and serve no purpose in that sentence.

El camarero de la foto tendrá* unos cuarenta y cinco años.

*I prefer tendrá or debe tener instead of tiene because in Spanish we favor the subjunctive and the future to make guesses and assumptions...things that are not facts.

    You could use "cuarentón" too.

"El camarero de la foto era cuarentón".

    In Spain we said that.
