Thread: What does 'scrubber' mean? / ¿Qué significa 'scrubber'?

I'm working on the translation into Spanish of a software and I'm not able to understand the meaning of the word 'scrubber' in the following sentence:

House Number or Box Number not found in the scrubber. Verify House or Box Number and resubmit, if changed.


The different meanings I found on the Internet and in dictionaries do not satisfy the context of my sentence. Could a scrubber be something like a list of details or record? What do you think?

Yes, flor1990, it certainly could be that! Now the problem is how to express that in Spanish. I'm not sure if there's a word like in English. In such case, I will have to explain the term as shortly as possible. Do you have any suggestions? I can't think of anything else apart from "registro" which does not express the "filtering" part of the term.

Maybe 'Directorio'? or 'Filtrar directorio'?

The first one you could use for alerts or messages, like the one above; and the second to name the tool per se.

The word scrubber, in this context, is a little more subtle. It refers to a process called 'normalization' - not filtering - which takes text data, and modifies (or 'scrubs') it in such a way to create identical text from two different, but essentially identical text data sets.

Such as this - the following three lines are 'scrubbed' to the normalized fourth line:

1. Bradley & Co., 4150 Baker Street, Phoenix, Arizona, 85256
2. BRADLEY AND COMPany, 4150 Baker St, Phoenix, AZ 85256
3. Bradley and Co., 4150 Baker Street, Phoenix AZ 85256

Normalized (scrubbed): BRADLEY AND COMPANY, 4150 BAKER ST, PHOENIX, AZ 85256

The objective of scrubbing is to take slight variations in the way certain data is represented, and standardize or normalize it, so that a computer program can deal with less possible variations.
