Thread: Help with "Chapulines"

So Grasshopper is "Saltamontes"
and Cricket is "Grillo"....

What is Chapuline? A Nickname for anything that resembles a cricket or a grasshopper? In Oaxaca people eat what Americans call "crickets" but isn't the more literal translation "grasshopper"?

Chapulín is a nahuatl word to name "grasshoper" not cricket. For example, Chapultepec means "grasshoper hill" and aztecs used the icon of a grasshoper on a hill to represent it. Thanks for the replies! Why are they called Chapulines when I think they are crickets? Just a mistake maybe?

They are not crickets. I have two friends from Mexico - one from Oaxaca and they both say they do not eat grillos they eat saltamontes. Chapulines is saltamontes.

Mmmmm! Yumi, yumi! Their taste is similar to dryed shrimps. Delicious with lemon and chili.
