Default is it worth it to learn Spanish for a career?

I know a good amount of Spanish, but I am not fluent. I'm thinking about spending some time in a Latin American country to become fluent, and I want to do it with the specific goal of becoming a translator/interpreter. But with all of the Spanish speakers available already, is this really a good idea? I live in Louisville, KY. I don't know if anyone else is in this area and could give me some insight on the likelihood of finding a job. I would love to continue studying Spanish but I want to make sure it will benefit my career. Would it be wiser to pursue a more needed language?

Hi Emmyloo, The Spanish-speaking segment constitutes a huge market for services and products, therefore Spanish translations are very required and will remain so, I think Spanish language will be very useful for your career, if you think that you have a good-enough level you can learn another very required languages, like Chinese.

It is always good news for a translator that the languages he handles grow. This means that there will be more texts produced in those languages, and therefore more to translate, although it also depends on the pair of languages you want to specialize in.
