    Default would not bid

Hola a todos. ¿Cómo se traduce "would not bid " en la frase siguiente?: She had loved her father with a clinging devotion beautiful to behold, and so he separated them -would not bid the old man to Fairy Water, or suffer her to visit her former home.
    Gracias y un saludo.

One of the several definitions of "bid" is to express a wish or feeling. EX: "I bid you farewell"; "I bid you goodnight"

In this case I think it means that "he would not invite the old man to come to Fairy Water, or allow her to visit her former home."

En este caso, ¿"would" equivaldría a "used not to invite" o a "he didn´t invite"?
