Creo que se refiere a la chaqueta que indica su posición o puesto como paje.

If you skip all the adjectives, the sentence subject is creature. Something like this:
A creature supposed to represent ....
Therefore, the translation would be
Una persona que se suponia representaba su rango como paje .... Etc

Haha...you're probably right California but I'm not sure...
I read it like: "A creature...answered the door." In between I read that he was small and wearing a jacket that represented his rank as a page.
