Thread: had I marvelled

Hola. ¿Qué significa "had I marvelled" en el texto siguiente?:
"I wonder what may be his opinion on the subject of ghosts," I thought, as I sprang out of bed, and flinging open the window, looked forth over the country bathed in the morning glory of glittering dew and molten gold.
Perhaps it might have been more to the purpose had I marvelled what my own opinion was on the same matter; but I shrank from a strict mental examination at the time.
No le veo sentido a "si me hubiera maravillado." ¿Quizá podría ser "si me hubiera preguntado"?
El texto está sacado de la novela The haunted house at Latchford, publicada en 1872.

Creo que tiene valor condicional pasado. "Si me hubiera sorprendido..."

Coincido con Estefania. Está hablando del pasado, de algo que no sucedió así...

Coincido con Ana y Estefanía en que esto es el condicional pasado. Se suele recurrir a esta forma de condicional en textos más literarios... Es como si hubieran dicho "If I had marvelled..." (but I didn´).
Pero Antonio no pregunta eso, creo que la pregunta de Antonio va más al verbo... si es de maravillar o de preguntar...Yo creo que sí el autor intenta decir maravillado... Qué pasa si me hubiera maravillado? En cambio trató de evitar hacer un análisis...
