Hi.
I am new to this forum, and to the Spanish language. My wife and I are taking Spanish (Latin American) lessons at the local Adult Ed. school.
Can someone tell me the difference between using the verb AMAR, and the verb QUERER.
Thx.

Check out this thread:
Te quiero / Te amo
I think it will answer your question, but if not, let us know!
Cheers,

Amar and querer can be perfect synonims, but in many cases querer is closer to want.
Did you ever see that Tacobell ad, where the chihuahua says, "Yo quiero taco bell"? Well, the dog wants taco bell. If you say "Yo amo taco bell"... well... you have issues... because you love taco bell.
This is a tricky subject, because English has only that one word to express two emotions in Spanish. I guess this is one of those things that can't really be explained to a person, but rather they have to develop a sense for it, as time progresses and your Spanish improves, you'll get it!
But I guess that as guidelines you should reserve "amar" for anything that you feel a strong emotional love for, like your wife or children. Use "querer" for anything that you want, like taco bell.
Thank you all for responding.
Even though my Merriam-Webster Spanish-English dictionary says 'te quiro' means 'I love you', it looks like I should say 'te amo' to my wife instead.

Bob, no dictionary can/ will/ should tell you what to tell to your wife -but if you feel it, do tell her "te amo"!!! (in any case, and in any language, if you really love her, and if you're lucky enough and she loves you too, no words are necessary, don't you think?)Originally Posted by Bob6831
Oh Laura............... I do agree with your statement about the dictionary should not tell me what to say or not to say.......... but your last statement is often criticized by women to men, that YES, do need to SAY 'I love you' more often!!!

Great guys!!
yeah, but it´s good to now... so as no te get embarrassed!!! imagine this: I want you!!! well, which can be real and true!!! (more laughs)
