Hi. I know in Italy Ciao means hello or goodbye. I've heard friends from Spain say it as well. I'm wondering if it is spelled the same way as Italian, ciao, or is it spelled chao? Anyone have a clue? Thanks.

Hi Lulu! As you say, "Ciao" in Italian is used to greet both when you meet someone/arrive some place or to say goodbye. In Spanish -at least in Argentina- we use the word only to say goodbye, and it's spelled "Chau".
Chau!

Hi lulu! Spanish is my maternal language, and I know lauracipolla is right. additionally, in some Spanish speaking countries (like central america and mexico) chao it is a correct spelling.
I agree. And I have heard it used often in Costa Rica. I end my telephone conversations with chao when I call Central America and Mexico.Originally Posted by jaimeman
