Thread: Show me how to fly...

Hola! I'm working on a book and in it a character quotes from a line of made up Spanish poetry. The line goes "Show me how to fly, my beautiful butterfly." This is the Spanish version I've come up with:

“Demuéstreme cómo volar, mi mariposa hermosa,”

Is this anywhere close to being right? Can someone please correct this for me? Thanks!

Quizás: "Muéstrame cómo se vuela, mi mariposa hermosa"

I agree with ElVizconde, JasmineGal: to show is "mostrar", "demostrar" is like prove... I like "Muéstrame cómo volar" better... but it's just a matter of taste.

Hi! Your choice of words is not wrong, but I'd personally approach it differently. Maybe something like: "Enseñame a volar, mi hermosa mariposa."

"Enséñame a volar" is a good alternative (many times "enseñar" is used as a synonym of "mostrar"; DRAE #4 meaning; though "enséñame a volar" would definitely be "teach me to fly")... I like it! But in any case, the choice would depend on the rest of the context...

Sounds good, but it would be "Enseñame a volar, mi mariposa hermosa" right? Verb before adjective? And is it enseñame or enséñeme?

you surely mean "noun before adjective"? it's not a rule. In Spanish we can have it both ways: "hermosa mariposa", "mariposa hermosa". exactly the same. (In fact, I'm now thinking it would be better to replace the adj by "bella", to avoid the rhyme in "-osa", unless that's specially intended!).

in Argentina, where we use "vos" as the 2nd person pronoun for close relations, it would be "enseñame" (stress on center syllable), (other examples: "decime", "contame", "mostrame"). in other countries, this pronoun is "tú" and the verb would be "enséñame" ("dime", "cuéntame", "muéstrame").

we also have in Spanish the 2nd person pronoun "usted" for more distant/ respectful/ formal treatment (in all countries). in that case it would be "enséñeme" ("dígame", "cuénteme", "muéstreme").
