    Default Relationship

    In forms in English we use the word relationship to indicate how you know a person such as a family member or a friend.

    Are parentesco or consanguinidad used in the same way or do these words only refer to family relationships? If so what work is used to request a more general relationship?

    Hi Joel,

    I think you can just use the word "relación" in this context, its neutral and serves the purpose.

    "Parentesco" and "consanguinidad" are formal words that exclusively indicate a family relationship so I don't think they would apply here.

    In legal context "parentesco" is classified into:

    "parentesco por consanguinidad": Family relationship (blood related)

    and

    "parentesco por afinidad": The relationship that a person has to the blood relatives of a spouse by virtue of the marriage.
