Hi everyone!

How would you translate the military unit "commando"?
I know it's an amphibian attack unit in the US Army, are there translations for this kind of term that possibly we don't have in Spanish?

it is hard because commando sounds like comando in Spanish, also we have had quite a pollution of the term by Arnold movies, it also depends on the country in Argentina for instance we say "Unidades especiales" like "fue entrenado en una unidad especial"

Or "fuerzas especiales".

Actually, Veronica, "commando" is not an American term. As I recall, the word came into the English language from Dutch during the Boer War at the end of the 1800s in South Africa. During World War II, the Americans wanted a distinct name for US units doing the same basic functions as the British commandos, and "rangers" was the word chosen. I believe the first rangers were Roger's Rangers during the French and Indian War. An excellent account of the adventures and deeds of the group can be found in the novel "Northwest Passage". If you saw "Blackhawk Down", you saw US Rangers in Somalia. Other commando-like units in the US military include Force Recon (US Marine Corps), SEALs (US Navy), Delta Force (US Army), the Green Berets (US Army), and even the US Air Force. The USAF has a special forces unit, but its name escapes me. I do not believe you will hear a member of the US military say that he or she is a "commando".
