Thread: Old chum

Hello!
I dont understand the meaning of "old chum" in the following phrase:

"I will brief you on how this bloody place works." (...) "Its just like being back at school, old chum,"

The phrase is from the book First Among Equals, by Jeffrey Archer (Chapter one, third or four page depending on each version.)

Can anybody help me with this expression??

I haven't read the book but I'm almost sure that it means something like "my friend" or something like that... It's like a friendly way of referring to someone in speech to involve him/her in the conversation.
Again, I'm not sure, so if anyone could confirm it, that would be great!

Chum means amigo, but more like "cuate" (Mexico), "pana" (Venezuela), "pata" (Peru).
