But, i've got a doubt: is your friend mexican? or he was born in your country and then he moved to mexico city? In that last case the sentence is right.

so, may be you could say "a propósito, ¿Cuál fue la razón por la que te mudaste a la ciudad de mexico?" or "¿Cuál fue la razón por la que te mudaste a la capital de mexico?" if he moved from a city to the capital of mexico.

If Mexican. boleto de avión would be just fine.

As for mexico, that does not exist. It is México, with a Capital Letter as any other country.
