Thread: Tocarle a uno

The sentence:

Me tocó hacer de Director y en ello estoy todavía

and my attempt:

It fell to me to act as a Director and I keep still the job.

or

It was my turn to act as a Director and I keep still the job.

... and I still keep the job

...and I still have the job

Just one question... Why do you say "It was my turn to act..." instead of just "I had to act..."? I'm just asking, because I would've used the second one, but maybe I'm wrong...!!

There is some ambiguity in interpreting the original statement.

Me tocó could be it was my turn or it fell to me, and these are not exactly the same. It was my turn suggests that the job rotated among a group, and it fell to me suggests that there was some compelling reason why I, and no one else, had to take on the job.

I had to do it doesn't convey either of these subtleties, it suggests obligation without hinting at the circumstances.

I'm not the author of the sentence, but I think he said it in a way that could mean obligation and even pride as no one else could do the job.
So I hesitate between I had to and it fell to me.
