Thread: Cosumbo

Is the word "cosumbo" spanish or quechua? And does it mean coati or kinkajou? I've tried Googling it and I'm still unclear!!

This word doesn't appear in the online dictionary Real Academia Española which is broadly considered an authoritative source. And I've never heard it before, being a native Spanish speaker. So I'd say that it's not Spanish. I'll leave someone else the task of confirming whether it's quechua or not, and its meaning.

As far I was able to see, cosumbo is a misspelling of cusumbo, wich means coatí in Colombia: Diccionario de la lengua española - Vigésima segunda edición

It looks like in quechua it's: sacha-mono, so I guess cusumbo may come from some other Colombian native language.

I looked it up and it seems to be "coatí", it does look like a rat and a monkey... but a bit like a raccoon as well, doesn't it?
