Thread: Art description translation

I am currently working at the Galería de Gabriela Mistral in Santiago, Chile, and am attempting to translate some descriptions of art. There are a few phrases that are a bit confusing, however...

Okay, this is what I have... and I should mention that I am not working, working with them but volunteering... Meaning, basically I can't be fired. Heh.
1. Puedo controlar el exterior desde mi ventana

Este video instalación nos presenta una serie de videos recientes, que se relacionan entre sí a partir de un acercamiento a la Historia de la Pintura, tanto desde el estudio de sus normas como desde la noción de la representación y de toda obra como una ficción. Las obras invitan al espectador a establecer una reflexión en torno a las ideas de movimiento e inmovibilidad, postura y pose, la posición del espectador frente a la imagen, así como también a la percepción del tiempo en la transformación de la naturaleza. Esta exposición también investiga acerca de los compartimentos estancos asignados al ‘ video arte` y al ´cine de exposición`, con sus límites cada vez más difusos. Pentimenti, obra que propone el conflicto entre naturaleza y domesticación; y Figures devant une métamorphose. Mur I, Figures devant une métamorphose. Mur II y Dialogue d´insectes, tres obras realizadas por encargo de la Fundación Joan Miró de Barcelona e inspiradas en la obra del artista catalán.

1. I Can Control the Exterior From My Window
This video installation shows us a series of recent videos that relate between the bringing together of the history of painting, the study of the rules of painting as well as the notion of representation and from all work like a fiction. The work invites the spectator to reflect upon the concepts of movement and stagnancy, posture and pose, the position of the spectator in front of the image, as well as from the perception of time in the transformation of nature. This exposition also closely investigates the still frames assigned to video art and the cinema of exposition, with its limitations becoming more vague with every look. The pertinence of the work suggests a conflict between nature and domestication, Figures facing a metamorphosis. Wall I, Figures facing a metamorphosis. Wall II Dialogue of Insects, are three works created under the commission of the Joan Miró Foundation of Barcelona and inspired by the work of the Catalan artist.

2. Viexpo

Viexpo problematiza la memoria histórica, por medio de las huellas de la arquitectura local. Escoge el retablo y la fotografía para analizarla y representarla literalmente, como una suerte de documentación tridimensional y reflexión crítica frente a ciertas políticas institucionales. La ciudad y su memoria han sido ejes claves en el trabajo de Portus, con un constante cruce de referentes, soportes y técnicas. Así, rescata como título para la muestra `VIEXPO', feria realizada en 1972, que buscaba destacar los avances de la Unidad Popular y de los países socialistas, respecto al sector de la vivienda y urbanismo. Al recuperar este nombre el artista alude al evento no realizado, al fracaso de ciertas utopías urbanas y políticas estatales.

Viexpo questions our historic memory through the footprints of local architecture. The artist chooses the altarpiece and photography to analyze this historic memory and represents it literally, as if it were the fate of three-dimensional documentation and critical reflection to certain political institutions. The city and her memory has been the central theme in the work of Portus, with constant cross-referencing, endurance and technique. For this reason, he has revived the word VIEXPO for the title of this exhibit, a fair that was put on in 1972, that sought to enhance the advances of the People´s Unity as well as the advances of socialist countries with respect to housing and city planning. To rediscover this name the artist alludes to the unfulfilled event, and to the failure of certain urban utopias and political states.

6. Oscuro suspendido

Intervención sonoro visual pensada específicamente para la galería, generada y finalizada in situ en la que convergen preguntas recurrentes sobre el arte textil, vinculadas a la importancia de las operaciones manuales y la memoria material. Con el fin de enfatizar aún más en una propuesta específica para la Galería Balmaceda, considerando que la línea curatorial remitía sobre todo al aniversario de este espacio de arte joven en Santiago, incorpora un trabajo de sonido específico que alude a las experiencias vividas en ese espacio, a todas las propuestas artísticas que pasaron por esa sala desde 1998.

Para ello, Bárbara Palomino recopila los registros que tenia la Galería de sus curatorias anteriores y las entrevistas realizadas a los artistas con el fin de fusionar sus voces y generar a partir de su superposición un efecto de susurro permanente pero muy sutil, que surge desde la superficie de papel que se expande por el techo de la sala, como un sonido que se apropia del espacio, pero que es aparentemente imperceptible a primeras por el espectador y solo a medida que éste permanece en la sala empieza a ser audible. El espacio de exhibición es concebido así como volumen en el que se producen interferencias, otorgando al trabajo una forma de interpretación directamente vinculada con el espacio ambiente que lo rodea.

Intervention visual resonance conceived of specifically for the gallery, generated and finalized on location, in which recurring questions converge regarding textile art, linking the importance of manual operation and material memory. With the end of the emphasis even more in a specific proposal for the Balmaceda Gallery, considering that the curator´s line subsides over everything on the anniversary of this space of youth art in Santiago, incorporates the work of specific sound that alludes to the life experiences of that space, and all the artistic proposals that have passed through this room since 1998.
