You know me and know the best I am going to do is propose a translation. The word for a jeweler's magnifier is a "loupe". Anyone who has seen one being used knows the jeweler's face is distorted into a grimace to hold the lens in place.

The jeweler had placed a loupe of high magnification on his right eye. His expertise and the distortion of his face to accommodate the instrument were sufficient reasons to explain why the weight did not cause it to slide from its precarious position.
