    Default A writer's verses

I've got to translate this passage from a book, which describes a poem that starts badly and then improves:

Sus versos empiezan más bien flojos y por suerte van a más.

Can anyone suggest a good literary translation which captures the meaning?

I think you translated it just fine. I might soften it a bit and say "His verses begin somewhat weak but fortunately improve".
