Ella era un de esas republicanas de hueso colorado que seguian al pie de la letra las doctrinas de Reagan.

I get the gist, but how would you translate it? And, is un a typo? Should it be una?

She was one of those dyed-in-the-wool Republicans that followed the doctrines of Reagan to the letter.

I would say:
She was a Republican through and through like the ones who followed the doctrines of Reagan word by word.

Any ideas about the origin of "hueso colorado"? Red bones? Is this like "red states" or "blue states"?

La verdad no es una frase frecuente en donde yo vivo... pero sí entiendo el significado por el parecido con un dicho que he oido muchas veces:

cualquier adjetivo + hasta la médula

Se usa para hacer referencia a gente que es fanática de algo y también se usa para hablar de personas muy aferradas a una idea política.
