Hola!! I've been trying to become a certified translator and I can't seem to find the right place to get the information. I live in Richmond, Virginia and would like to become a translator. Does anybody know how to go about it.

Hi Laura, I honestly don’t know what the current situation is, but up until a few years ago there was no examination or legal institution in the USA from which a translator could obtain official certification. I doubt that this situation has changed, but it might very well have. In my country (Venezuela) the certification is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Justice, after a previous examination. I suggest contacting the language department of a University close by, to see if they can provide you with some information .

Hi Hebe
Thank you for your help. I'll try the local colleges. You have been most helpful. If I want to become an independent translator for businesses, do you know what I need to do to promote myself? Thanks in advance.
Laura
Laura, you can also try applying for membership to the ATA - American Translators Association - http://www.atanet.org/. It also has directory of translators and interpreters.
Good luck!
Hi Laura.. You could try using bulleting boards at key places. For instance, most Notaries in USA are authorized to legalize documents for their validation abroad. People who request legalization services at notaries are likely to need translation services afterwards. Try establishing connection with the personnel of various Notary’s offices. You will also find that the most effective promotion of your work will be provided by each satisfied client. He/she is sured to pass on the information to other persons needing translation
Best of Luck
