I think I've been bitten by the same "bug": I was also on the wrong track. Thanks to Thomas and Vicente for their precise information: as Exx said, I wasn't aware of this idiom either. Nevertheless, as Vicente pointed out, the idiom has to be written with "the"; without it, the phrase is all the more confusing for someone who doesn't know it.
