Thread: help please

I am trying to translate a story , and I am stuck with a few phrases:- 'del ignoto',and 'quien encabezaba la junta militar que habia reemplazado' and 'donde nacen las fabulas y perecen los hombres'. Thanks in advance.clo

The context was "Chile posee un trozo de tierra del ignoto continente antartico, un mundo de hielo y soledad, de infinita blancura, donde nacen las fabulas y perecen los hombres".I think that means"Chile owns a piece of undiscovered land in the Antartic, a world of endless whiteness, where, as you said, stories are born and men perish.
The other part of the story was referring to general Pinochet, quien encabezaba la junta militar que habia reemplazado a la democracia unos meses antes. I am taking this to mean "who was leading the military assembly? that had replaced democracy some months previously". Am I correct so far?

I agree with SandraT, this sounds more natural. To use the word "democracy" in this context sounds a little awkward.
