Thread: Need a word for "Party"

Hi! My first post/question....we are hosting some new friends from Colombia and are having a party for them. Can you tell the the Spanish translation for "party"? Fiesta is the only word I can think of, but this is like an evening reception, and fiesta doesn't seem right--is there another word that suggests a convivial gathering?

Regarding your question, I think "fiesta" is not incorrect... You could also say you are having a "fiesta de bienvenida" for your friends...

That's one option... Let's see what other people say...

Perhaps you could use the word "reunión", it's something like gathering or "get-together"... That's the only other alternative I can think of! Hope it helps!

Si, creo que reunión también es una opción correcta... De hecho, "fiesta de bienvenida" es mas formal, no?? Y reunion, mas informal...

Si, pero creo que "fiesta" le resulta demasiado informal... Habria que encontrar un termino intermedio para lo que quiere decir... Creo yo! =)

fiesta de bienvenida, it´s more like a collocation too, and it´s not either too formal or informal...

I think that you can translate it as "fiesta de bienvenida" and it would sound perfect. :-)
