Hi there! It's not working for me! :-(
I have tried it out with the simple sentence: "The mouse was climbing up the roof when he got caught by the furious cat." whether into French or Spanish and it wouldn't work.

That´s right. The tool doesn´t seem to be working any longer. When you try to use the translator it sends you back to the home page.

The free online translation tools can be a real boon. They will literally translate whatever you put into them and can certainly give you a basic understanding of what a foreign document is trying to relate. Free translator directory is one such among all.

The translation is okay for single words or simple phrases, but it's not very good for translating larger texts.

amayo is absolutely right! It’s a practical tool, but under a certain few conditions.

First off, you need to take into account the language pairs. There are certain pairs that work better (e.g., Spanish or French into English). Secondly, look out for the “quality” of the source. A bad source will definitely be misinterpreted by the machine.

When it comes to type of content, neither creative/literature like nor highly technical ones yield an excellent output. Besides, if you have proper names that must not be translated, there is no way to avoid it if you use Google or any other “generic” engine. For that you need to create your own MT engine.
