Thread: Wordfast is failing to get machine translation from Google

Hello everyone. I'm brand new to this, therefore if I'm doing something wrong, please excuse me.

I'm having a problem with Wordfast Pro. When I change the preferences to have Wordfast do a Machine Translation, it will do it for 1 or 2 sentences. Then it stops and I get an error message: "Failed to leverage segment. The following error occured: MT Google: Failed to get machine translations. Error while communicating to server. Please note that this TM will be disabled."

I'm an in-house translator for a school district and a freelance translator and I'm having this problem where I work and also at home. The Internet connections in both places are solid, therefore I'm starting to think that there's something wrong with Wordfast. Has anyone experience this problem, too? It's annoying, especially since it worked fine when I first started using Wordfast Pro. Now it doesn't work.

Could there be a setting that needs to be tweaked?

Please advise.

Thanks for your reply. Shortly after my thread, I saw similar information to what you posted, directly from Wordfast. They say, and I quote: "Note that Wordfast Classic and Wordfast Anywhere let you use an alternative machine translation service (Microsoft Translate), which is not (yet) limited. We are working on adding support for alternative MT service in Wordfast Pro as well."

Hi MANTRONIX! Trados, with their new 2011 release, share this same problem. They promised to be working out a way to solve it with their upcoming Service Pack. However, no one knew when that SP will be released. Meanwhile, someone that should be rendered a "great friend" of Trados users has come up with a workaround that works perfectly well. Pawel has posted it at his blog and you can easily Google it by looking for ways on How to make Trados Studio work with Google Translate API V2 (unfortunately, I am scared to paste the link and have this post erased).
That being said, maybe you can follow my steps and google for a workaround that some charitable friend might have come up with for Wordfast. Never say die! :-) Best of luck!...And keep us posted as it would be great to share with our entire community.
