Default Japanese writing: vertical or horizontal?

I was wondering if Japanese writing is vertical or horizontal. I need to have a document translated from English into Japanese, but I'm not sure how the writing should look. I think both are possible, but what's the difference?

Japanese writing is horizontal in these days, though it was vertical in old time. Chinese is the same. Actually Japanese writing characters are "borrowed" from Chinese, that's why there are similarity between Japanese and Chinese.
