Mmmm.. When I worked in a petrochemical business the engineers used to use AutoCad a lot... I remeber having to install a plugin to AutoCad to show some 3D PDF.
In my opinion the PDF is much more simple to handle/edit.. But, an edition on AutoCad might be more.. ehm.. accurate?

Cheaper can be more expensieve. Making editable a PDF can cause a big loss of functions and details. We have talked about the process in this thread:
