BOTH are important! The perfect equilibrium... as in life. Studying is always important, and experience gives you that added value that books don't...

Mem is right, both theory and experience are equally important for a translator, but I'd add one more ingredient: READING. A good translator is always a good reader, so if you want to become translator, read as much as you can, tons of books, magazines, newspapers, but mainly books.
