    Default Transliteration

Hello, transliteration is converting text from one writing system to another. Do you know if transliteration of names from English into Japanese is something arbitrary or we can choose or create new characters to transliterate a name?

Japanese uses the writing system called Katakana for phonetic transliteration.

So it mean it's arbitrary. My question is because I was managing a translation from English into Japanese. The translator sent the text with a note saying that the client should check that the name was spelt ok. I thought that if this was arbitrary there should be no need to check anything.
