Thread: How do you say cédula de vecindad in English?

You're right Clara...it doesn't exist...at least not in the U.S. We do not have national, state or local cedulas or ID cards per se. Our most common form of ID is our driver's license; then our social security cards, voter's registration card, insurance ID cards, passports, etc.

I am unaware of any state or local jurisdiction that issues ID cards.

The closest thing I can think of would be the voter's registration certificate (Certificado de Registro Electoral) which fully identifies the person and the county and precinct in which he is registered to vote. That is a local or vecindad type of ID.

Well, Clara, literally, as you know, it means a "neighborhood or vicinity (local) identification document/certificate" and since we don't have such a thing I cannot think of a suitable English term.

As you say, we need more context. How is it being used? Is cedula de vecindad a generic phrase or the title of an ID card?

It could be a form of private (non-governmantal) identification such as an ID card to enter an exclusive, gated residential neighborhood or something similar.
