Apart from being a synonim for "cerveza", in México, "Chela" is also the nickname of Marcela or Graciela, so some guys use to say "Dame una Graciela bien muerta", which actually means "Dame una cerveza bien fría" (Give me a very cold beer).

Unfortunately, I have no idea how "chela" became a synonim of cerveza.

en el DRAE también está chelo/a, proveniente del maya "chel", que significa azul y se aplica en México a las personas rubias de ojos azules. creo q por ahí debe venir la similitud: rubia = cerveza (rubia, claro).

me encantó lo de la "chela bien muerta". muy gracioso. en Argentina también le decimos "birra" (como en italiano)... de cualquier manera, creo q es información muy útil saber decirlo en varios idiomas -no vaya a ser q uno se encuentre en otro país y no sepa pedirla, y tenga q terminar tomando una gaseosa ! jajaja

In chile chela also means beer I guess we copied from mexicans. It is called like this cause there was tv spot or somethig which said The blond that everyone wants....In méxico a blond girl is also called chela.....so that's why.I guess

I have heard the term for chela meaning beer.
I have also heard the term chele for very light skinned. My uncle was always called "el chele", because although he had dark hair, his skin color was veeeeeeeery light!!!! Almost an albino, except for the dark hair.

Tambien puede ser derivado del ingles "chiller" ... ¿no?

"Chela", in some spanish speaking countries, is just a slang word for beer. The word also means 'blondie' or golden. So, that means that it could be defined by it's color. I also know that chela is short for chelada, which is a drink that has beer, lime juice, other vegetable or fruit juices on a salt rimmed glass. Hope this helped
