Thread: ¿Chulo?

I am new to this forum but I have been confused about the word "Chulo" for some time now. I worked with some people from Puerto Rico and found it to be an expression meaning "cute" or "presioso" but was once reprimanded by an older woman for using the expression "!Que Chulo!" She told me in spanish, "Tu eres una mujer bien educada y intelligente. No es necissario para usar estas palabras!" Can someone please help?

Simply put, yes and no.
We have many spanish dialects. What can mean something innocent to one can be a disrespectful word to another one.
Chulo has a variety of meanings and everyone here is correct. It all depends what country you are from, etc.
To Puerto Rican it DOES mean cutie, hottie. Ie. Papi Chulo, que Chulo, es un Chulo.
It also means the same to some other countries.
But like ggq and Sandra said- in their countries it means Pimp and everything associated with that name.
Your safest bet is that if you use a word and someone says something- let that person know that to you that means ______________.
I remember that one time I used a word that was "cachucha". To me, from the various groups I've been with, I knew that meant baseball cap. Lo and behold I bump into an Argentinian friend, The word came up, very innocently, and she went RED! Apparently to them that mean a female's privates! Ha!
